What is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing.
What can you expect from a Reiki session?
Before starting a session you will be asked to remove your shoes, watch and glasses but you will remain fully clothed. During the treatment you will be seated or lying down. The Reiki practitioner will move his/her hands to different positions from the head to your feet (sometimes touching and sometimes keeping his/her hands at a certain distance from the body).
How long does a Reiki treatment last?
It depends on the therapist but it usually last in between 30 minutes and 1 hour.
What can I expect to feel during a Reiki treatment?
You may feel sensations such as heat, coolness, tingling, uncontrollable laughter or tears. You may feel nothing but they go into a deep state of relaxation. You may even fall sleep. It is not unusual for people to feel the energy moving to areas of old injury or tension.
How many Reiki treatments do people require?
Because no two people are the same; then no two people will respond to Reiki in the same way. For people with chronic conditions, weekly treatments are usually recommended for about four to six weeks. This allows the energy to build up in the system. The treatments can then be reviewed accordingly. Those with an acute condition may notice lasting improvements after only one or two treatments. Again, no two cases are the same.
Can I have Reiki if I am on medication?
Yes, you may. Reiki is being used in many hospitals worldwide alongside conventional medicine.
Why does my Reiki practitioner ask me to remove my jewellery before Reiki?
Because metal is a conductor of energy.

Is Reiki a substitute to conventional medicine?
No, Reiki is complementary to conventional medicine and to all other complementary therapies.
Do I have to believe in Reiki in order for it to work?
No, but the thoughts are energy so it is ideal that anyone receiving the therapy should have an open mind. If a person is adamant that Reiki will not work for them; they are unlikely to get a good result as their negativity will adversely affect the energy flow.
What are the recommendations following a Reiki treatment?
- To drink a lot of water after the treatment (minimum 2L) to help flush toxins from your body, plus help to conduct your body’s energy flow.
- Avoid over consumption of stimulants such as coffee/tea/soft drinks containing caffeine or alcohol for the same reason.
- Increase rest time.
