You finish work, close your laptop and tell yourself that the working day is over.

But your mind has other plans.

You think about the email you forgot to send, tomorrow’s meeting, a difficult conversation with a colleague or the growing list of things waiting for you in the morning.

Even when you are technically no longer working, part of you is still at work.

If this sounds familiar, you are not alone.

For many professionals and business owners, switching off has become increasingly difficult. Work follows us home through our phones, notifications and, perhaps most importantly, our thoughts.

Over time, this constant mental connection to work can leave you feeling tired, irritable and unable to fully enjoy your time outside your job.

So why is it so difficult to switch off — and what can you do about it?

Why your mind stays at work

Being unable to switch off doesn’t necessarily mean you are bad at managing your time.

Often, it is connected to the way we respond to pressure.

You may feel responsible for everything going well. You might struggle to say no, feel uncomfortable leaving tasks unfinished or believe that being constantly available makes you more committed to your job.

For business owners, it can be even harder.

When the business is yours, there is always something else you could be doing.

The problem is that if your mind never gets a genuine break, stress can gradually become your normal state.

Creating a healthier work-life balance starts with recognising these patterns and making small, deliberate changes.

1. Create a clear end to your working day

When you work from an office, commuting home naturally creates some separation between work and personal life.

Remote and hybrid working has made that boundary much less obvious.

Try creating your own end-of-day ritual.

It could be as simple as:

writing tomorrow’s priorities down;

closing your laptop;

tidying your workspace;

changing your clothes;

going for a short walk;

or making a cup of tea.

The activity itself is less important than the message it sends:

Work is finished for today.

Repeated consistently, a simple ritual can help your mind transition from professional mode into personal time.

2. Stop treating everything as urgent

One of the biggest sources of workplace stress is the feeling that everything needs to happen immediately.

But does it?

When every task feels urgent, your brain remains constantly alert.

Before reacting to something, ask yourself:

Does this really need my attention today?

There will always be another email, another request and another task.

Learning to distinguish between what is genuinely important and what can wait is an important part of protecting your energy.

3. Get unfinished tasks out of your head

Our minds tend to return to unfinished tasks.

If you suddenly remember something you need to do tomorrow, you may keep thinking about it because your brain is trying not to forget it.

Instead of carrying the task mentally throughout the evening, write it down.

Create a simple list before finishing work:

Tomorrow I need to…

Once the task is recorded somewhere you trust, you no longer need to keep reminding yourself about it.

You are not solving tomorrow’s problems tonight.

You are simply making sure tomorrow-you knows what to do.

4. Set boundaries with technology

Sometimes work follows us home because we allow it constant access.

You check one email after dinner.

Then another.

Before you know it, you are mentally back at your desk.

Consider creating some simple boundaries:

turn off work notifications after a certain time;

remove work email from your personal phone if possible;

avoid checking messages immediately before bed;

decide when you are — and are not — available.

Setting boundaries doesn’t mean you care less about your work.

It means you recognise that rest is necessary if you want to perform well consistently.

5. Pay attention to what your stress is telling you

Stress is not always caused by having too much work.

Sometimes it comes from a lack of control, unclear expectations, perfectionism, difficult relationships or feeling that your work is no longer aligned with what matters to you.

Instead of only asking:

“How can I become less stressed?”

try asking:

“What is creating the most pressure in my life right now?”

The answer may point towards something that needs to change.

My Stress Management Programmes are designed around this approach — identifying your individual stressors and developing practical strategies that fit your circumstances rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all solution.

6. Give yourself something to transition into

It is much easier to leave work mentally when your evening contains something that genuinely engages you.

This doesn’t need to mean filling every evening with activities.

It might be:

going for a walk;

exercising;

cooking;

spending time with family;

reading;

meeting a friend;

listening to music;

practising a hobby;

or simply sitting somewhere without your phone.

The goal is not to become productive in your free time.

It is to remind yourself that your identity is bigger than your work.

7. Allow yourself to pause

For some people, doing nothing can feel uncomfortable.

The moment they stop, they begin thinking about everything that still needs to be done.

But rest is not wasted time.

Creating space to pause can help you become more aware of how you are feeling and what you actually need.

Practices that encourage relaxation and reflection can be helpful here.

For example, I often combine coaching with distance Reiki as part of my holistic approach to helping clients slow down, create space and reconnect with themselves.

The goal is not to escape from your responsibilities.

It is to create enough distance from them that they no longer occupy every moment of your day.

Work-life balance doesn’t have to be perfect

A healthy work-life balance doesn’t mean dividing your time perfectly between work and personal life.

Some weeks will be busier than others.

Deadlines happen. Businesses go through demanding periods. Unexpected problems appear.

What matters is whether pressure is temporary — or whether being constantly overwhelmed has become your normal way of living.

Start with one small boundary.

Finish work at a defined time.

Turn off one notification.

Leave one non-urgent task until tomorrow.

Take one evening without checking your email.

Small changes can begin to create much-needed space between your work and the rest of your life.

Ready to create more space in your life?

If you find it difficult to switch off, feel constantly overwhelmed or struggle to make time for yourself, you don’t have to simply accept stress as part of professional life.

Through my online Stress Management Programmes, we explore what is contributing to your stress and develop practical, personalised strategies to help you create a healthier work-life balance.

Sometimes the first step is simply giving yourself permission to stop.

Even for a little while.

Have you ever found yourself watching the clock on a Monday morning, already wishing it was Friday?

Maybe your job is fine on paper. You have experience, stability, a decent salary and perhaps even a career that others would consider successful.

And yet, something doesn’t feel right.

You may feel tired, disconnected or increasingly aware that the work you do no longer reflects who you are or what you want from life.

Thinking about a career change doesn’t necessarily mean you need to hand in your notice tomorrow. But it may be a sign that something deserves your attention.

Here are seven common signs that it might be time to explore a new direction.

1. You constantly count down to the weekend

Everyone has difficult days at work.

But if you regularly find yourself living for Friday evening and dreading Sunday night, it may be worth asking yourself why.

Work takes up a significant part of our lives. While no job will be enjoyable every single day, feeling consistently unhappy, frustrated or disconnected from your work can be a sign that your current career is no longer right for you.

Ask yourself:

If nothing changed in my working life for the next five years, how would I feel?

Your immediate reaction can tell you a lot.

2. Your work no longer feels meaningful

A career doesn’t have to be your life’s greatest passion.

However, most of us need some sense that what we do matters.

Perhaps you once felt motivated by your role, but over time that motivation has disappeared. Or maybe you chose your career because it seemed practical, secure or expected of you rather than because it genuinely suited you.

As we grow, our priorities change.

The career that made sense at 22 may not be the career that feels right at 35, 45 or 55.

And that is completely normal.

3. You feel exhausted even when work isn’t particularly busy

Sometimes the most draining part of a job isn’t the workload.

It is the feeling of constantly pushing yourself to do something that no longer feels aligned with you.

You might notice that you have less energy after work, struggle to switch off in the evenings or have little enthusiasm left for the things you normally enjoy.

Stress can slowly become part of everyday life until we stop noticing how much it is affecting us. If this sounds familiar, exploring ways to manage stress more effectively can be an important first step.

Instead of simply asking, “Can I cope with this job?”, try asking:

“Is this how I want to feel every week?”

There is an important difference.

4. You keep imagining yourself doing something else

Perhaps you regularly think about starting a business.

Maybe you are drawn to a completely different profession.

Or you find yourself reading job descriptions, researching courses or wondering what life would look like if you chose another path.

These thoughts don’t automatically mean you should change career.

But if the same idea keeps returning, it may be worth exploring rather than dismissing it.

Curiosity can be useful information.

5. Your values have changed

A career that once matched your priorities may no longer fit your life.

Perhaps success used to mean earning more money or gaining promotions.

Now, you might value flexibility, creativity, independence, meaningful work or having more time for your family.

Neither set of priorities is right or wrong.

What matters is whether your current career supports the life you want to create today.

One useful exercise is to write down your five most important values and then ask yourself:

How well does my current career reflect these values?

The answer can provide surprising clarity.

6. You feel stuck because you don’t know what else you could do

This is one of the most common obstacles to career change.

You know what you don’t want.

But you have no idea what you do want.

And because there is no obvious alternative, staying where you are can feel like the safest option.

The good news is that you don’t need to have your entire future mapped out before you start exploring.

Career clarity often develops gradually.

Start by looking at:

what you enjoy doing;

what gives you energy;

your natural strengths;

skills you have developed throughout your career;

environments in which you work best;

your values and priorities;

and what you want your life to look like outside work.

The goal isn’t simply to find another job.

It is to understand what kind of work genuinely fits you.

7. Fear is the main reason you stay

Changing career can feel frightening.

You may worry about money, starting again, losing your professional status or making the wrong decision.

You may think:

What if I regret it?

What if I fail?

What if I’m too old to change direction?

These fears are understandable.

But there is another question worth asking:

What happens if I change nothing?

Sometimes we spend so much time considering the risks of change that we forget to consider the risks of staying exactly where we are.

You don’t have to make a dramatic decision

A career change doesn’t have to begin with quitting your job.

Changing direction can feel overwhelming. My own career change journey taught me that clarity often comes gradually, through reflection rather than one dramatic decision.

In fact, it usually shouldn’t.

It can start quietly.

Have a conversation with someone working in an industry that interests you.

Take a short course.

Write down the parts of your current job you enjoy and the parts you would happily never do again.

Explore your strengths.

Research possibilities.

Give yourself permission to be curious without immediately committing to anything.

The first step is not making a decision.

The first step is gaining clarity.

From feeling stuck to moving forward

If you recognise yourself in several of these signs, you don’t need to have all the answers today.

Feeling uncertain can be uncomfortable, but it can also mark the beginning of something important.

Instead of asking:

“What job should I do next?”

try beginning with:

“What do I want my life and work to feel like?”

Once you understand your values, strengths and priorities, the practical career options often become much clearer.

And you don’t have to work it all out on your own.

Career change coaching can give you the space, structure and support to explore what you really want, challenge the beliefs that may be keeping you stuck and create a realistic plan for moving forward.

Your next career doesn’t need to be perfect.

It simply needs to feel more like you.

Ready to explore your next step?

If you’re feeling stuck in your career and would like more clarity about what comes next, my Career Change Coaching programme can help you explore your options and move forward with greater confidence.

Sometimes the biggest change begins with one simple question:

What would I choose if I stopped believing I had to stay where I am?
